The City of Milwaukee Election Commission is looking for hardworking citizens that have a dedication to democracy and protecting voter rights to work at the polls.

The experiences at the polls are highly rewarding, challenging, interesting and personally satisfying.  Many of the City's Election Inspectors have worked in these positions for 15 to 40 years.  We hope that you will consider contributing your time to strong elections in Milwaukee.

Below is a general job description of the three positions available at the polls: Election Inspector, Youth Inspector, Assistant Site Coordinator and Chief Inspector.  An in-depth description of each position is available through the application link that follows. 


ELECTION INSPECTOR POSITION  

Election Inspectors play a vital role at voting sites.  They work directly with voters and assist them in any of the following capacities:

  • Check-in registered voters and provide the voters with a ballot and voter number.
  • Register qualified individuals to vote who are new voters or have an address or name change.
  • Handle the voting machine to verify ballots are accepted and give out "I Voted" stickers.

Election Inspectors are paid $84.15 for a full-day shift and are required to attend one paid training class ($15).  To receive training class payment, you are required to work on Election Day.  Lunch and dinner breaks are allowed for full-day shift workers.  A full-day shift is 6:00 a.m. to close of the voting site.

YOUTH INSPECTOR POSITION  

Youth Inspectors are students that are at least 16 years of age that work at the polls.  They work with voters and assist them in in any of the following capacities:

  • Check-in registered voters and provide the voters with a ballot and voter number.
  • Register qualified individuals to vote who are new voters or have an address or name change.
  • Handle the voting machine to verify ballots are accepted and give out "I Voted" stickers.

Youth Inspectors are paid $84.15 for a full-day shift and are required to attend one paid training class ($15).  To receive training class payment, you are required to work on Election Day.  Lunch and dinner breaks are allowed for full-day shift workers.  A full-day shift is 6:00 a.m. to close of the voting site.  Youth Inspectors are required to complete the application and have the parental agreement completed by a parent/guardian and principal.

 ASSISTANT SITE COORDINATOR POSITION  

Assistant Site Coordinators are responsible for greeting and verifying the registration of Milwaukee voters in the poll books.  They are also responsible for assisting in the coordination and implementation of the traffic flow for voters through the voting site, including directing voters to registration or ward tables.  The following shifts will be available: 

  • Full-day shift: 6:00 a.m. to close of the voting site (lunch and dinner break permitted).
  • AM shift: 6:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (lunch break permitted).
  • PM shift: 1:30 p.m. to close of the voting site (dinner break permitted).

 CHIEF INSPECTOR POSITION  

Chief Inspectors manage the voting site and ensure all operating procedures are followed.  Chiefs are also responsible for completing Election Day documentation, reconciling voter numbers and ballots, and resolving voter concerns.

Chief Inspectors are paid $150 and must work a full-day shift.  An additional $25 is included for attending the mandatory training class.  To receive training class payment, Chiefs are required to work on Election Day for the full-day shift.  A full-day shift is 6:00 a.m. to close of the voting site.  Lunch and dinner breaks are allowed.
