The Great Lakes Tug OHIO towed the vessel JOHN SHERMAN to the Nidera grain elevator on September 7, 2006. The SHERMAN had been docked in Duluth, MN since 1981 before arriving at the Port of Milwaukee. The tug boat OHIO is 100 years old, built in 1906 originally as the Milwaukee Fire Department Engine No. 15 fireboat.  The model of this vessel shown below was made in 1908 by Captain Richard Rice. The hull of Engine No. 15 is still in tact. The Great Lakes Towing Company built a new house on top of the existing hull and is now called the OHIO. Captain Mike Patterson of Sault Ste. Marie headed the six man crew in towing the lanker to Milwaukee. The Port currently is home to two Great Lakes tugs, the VIRGINIA, built in 1914 and the ARKANSAS built in 1909.  The OHIO is a 16 cylinder vessel with 2500 horsepower, whereas the VIRGINIA and The ARKANSAS have 12 cylinders and 1250 horsepower. The smaller tugs are used in guiding ocean and lake vessels safely into port.  The larger OHIO is used to tow unpowered vessels such as the grain ship and to maneuver other tugs in Cleveland where the company has its headquarters and ship repair yard.
