Medical Assistance Outreach Program

About 44 million people in this country have no health insurance, and another 38 million have inadequate health insurance. This means that nearly one-third of Americans face each day without the security of knowing that, if and when they need it, medical care is available to them and their families.  Having no or inadequate health insurance also often means that people will postpone necessary care and forego preventive care - such as childhood immunizations and routine check-ups-completely. Because the uninsured and underinsured frequently have no regular doctor and limited access to prescription medications, they are more likely to be hospitalized for health conditions that could have been avoided.

What is the Medical Assistance Outreach Program?

The Medical Assistance Outreach Program is a vital service offered by the Milwaukee Health Department.  The Medical Assistance program employees are dedicated to getting community members the health care coverage to which they are entitled, as well as making referrals for clients to receive other important healthcare services.  There are several sites throughout the community at which the health care coverage assistance service is offered. The program uses bilingual staff to communicate in Spanish, Lao, Thai, and Hmong.  A contracted service is used to translate other languages so that there are as few barriers as possible to achieving our goal of servicing the entire Milwaukee community.
