The Milwaukee County Historical Society was founded in 1935 to collect, preserve, and make available materials relating to the history of the Milwaukee community. Through a broad range of activities, the Society seeks to promote a greater appreciation of the Milwaukee community's rich heritage and a better understanding of life today.

Among the Society's resources is the Milwaukee County Historical Center at the corner of North Old World 3rd Street and Kilbourn Avenue, adjacent to Pere Marquette Park. The Center houses a museum featuring a wide variety of exhibits on topics of local historical significance as well as exhibits linking Milwaukee to the larger community of the state and nation. The Center also contains an extensive library and archives of government and naturalization records, photo collections and personal papers.
