Emergency Medical Services (EMS) makes up nearly 80% of our total call volume. These calls range from mothers in labor to victims of heart attacks. In addition to educating about fire safety, the Milwaukee Fire Department takes the health and well being of the community very seriously. These educational venues provide invaluable information about a myriad of vital health that affects our community. The presentations can be tailored to a specific audience or general in nature.
Occasionally these venues are also used to provide stroke screening. The Milwaukee Fire Department works closely with the Milwaukee chapter of the American Stroke Association, and together works to reduce the devastating effects of stroke. During stroke screenings a simple blood pressure and questionnaire is completed by a firefighter or other health care professional. Individuals are then urged to follow-up with their primary physician.
There is a wide target audience for these presentations. Students as young as sixth grade can be taught to recognize signs of heart attack and stroke. Conditions such as asthma and diabetes affect people of all ages from 4 to 104. EMS presentations can be given in schools, places of worship, to senior groups and block clubs. In school settings these presentations go great in conjunction with a science or health class.
