Have you had enough of it this year?

We have. There has never been a year when so many friends and acquaintances have not only fallen, but broken arms, legs, shattered knees, injured rotator cuffs, etc. It really gives us pause when we leave our apartment.

Recently Jack did something he hasn’t done since he was ten years old; he made a snow angel. One morning, looking down from our 4th floor window at the building’s large terrace covered with deep virgin snow, he knew the moment was right. We have not yet lived here two years, but we (especially he) already have a reputation. We heard that several people spotted the angel and said that it must have been done by Jack. He is now looking forward to a good wet snow so that he can make a snowman. We are from an era that pre-dates today’s extensive (sometimes too extensive) weather forecasting. It was a time when you knew it was really cold if you could hear the snow squeaking as you walked on it. In the morning the bottles of milk left by the milkman would have columns of frozen cream sticking up out of them. This is strictly a Jack memory; I grew up in warm climates.

Early this morning Jack went into the small courtyard outside of our lower level café and affixed 3 pretend-birds to the tree knowing that it was too early for anyone to be a witness.

Jack hopes to do a tandem parachute jump sometime this year. Apparently hitting his 75th birthday in January caused him to start thinking about what he’d like to do while he’s still vigorous. I consider myself fortunate to not be prone to that sort of thinking. Maybe that’s because I’m four years younger.
