Did you ever stop and think about what kind of "older" person you'd like to be?
You've heard the story. The little granddaughter asks her grandma,
" Grandma, what's wrong with that old lady over there? She's scary!"
Grandma answers, "There's nothing wrong, honey. She's just a crabby old lady."
Granddaughter says, "Is that cause she's old?"
Grandma laughs and says, "No, honey...she's been like that all her life!"
As older adults do our personalities change or are we mirrors of who we were as children? Yes, I know there is a spread here of 60 or 70 years. But, if we were happy-go-lucky, imaginataive, curious children- is that who we are as elders? Or, if we were skittish, sour and doubtful children, is that who are as elders?
Did you hear about the major research survey that was released to the media in January of this year that dealt with "Happiness" and "Mid-Life Crisis?"
It seems that many of us hit the wall in our 40's. We begin to realize that we are not immortal, we are growing older, we probably won't become the CEO of that multi-national corporation, nor achievve some of the more lofty goals we had set for ourselves earlier.
What the study did find was that 20 and 30 year olds were happy people 50 and over were happy. Mmmmmmmmmmm............
Does life prepare us for the aging process? Does our age influence out attitudes about our ascent into elder-hood?
When we think about and plan for retirement we address issues like healthcare, finances, social networking, housing, lifestyle and many other issues.
But, do plan for who we're going to be....or want to be?
I don't have all of the answers. I just wondered what you think.
