4 Years to 40



"These domes, which we dedicate today, provide every citizen the chance for contact with beauty every day of the year," said then First lady, Lady Bird Johnson at the dedication of the new Mitchell Park Horticultural conservatory.


The opening of The Domes actually occurrred over a 4-year period: in 1964, the Floral Show Dome opened, and in 1965 Lady Bird Johnson dedicated the first of "The Domes"; In 1966 the Tropical Dome was completed; and in 1967 the Arid Dome was ready for the public.

In 2005, a Ribbon-cutting Reenactment-with Domes architect Donald Grieb-was the kick-off to a four-year capital fundraising campaign to improve the Mitchell Park Domes.


The celebration continues through 2008!
