Barrett vows to continue fight against crime on all fronts

Mayor Tom Barrett today released the following statement regarding the 2005 FBI crime numbers:

"I am not interested in the conflicting computer systems debate.  The fact is the numbers are too high.  I'm directing more and more resources to the Milwaukee Police Department including additional officers and more overtime, but the 2006 police budget is $209 million, essentially equal to the $213 million collected in property taxes.  This is a tough and expensive fight and my expectation is that the numbers will go down.

There is no question that business, community groups and churches must be involved.  I have the business community engaged in hiring kids for summer jobs.  I have community groups and ministers engaged in community crime prevention efforts and safe summer activities.  I am working with non-profit organizations to strengthen families by addressing teen pregnancy and supporting fatherhood.  We must hit every cylinder if we are going to adequately address the crime in this city and I will continue to fight this fight on every front."
