Barrett statement on tonight's verdicts in the Jude trial

Mayor Barrett tonight at a news conference with Milwaukee Police Chief Nan Hegerty delivered the following statement on the verdicts in the Frank Jude trial:

"I am absolutely shocked and outraged at the verdicts of the three fired officers in the Frank Jude trial tonight, but this is not over.  I have spoken to the U.S. Attorney's office and will ask for federal charges to be brought against these men for civil rights violations.

I believe in the people of Milwaukee.  I share in their outrage and shock tonight but I ask them to remain calm.  This is not over and the people of this city are better than those involved in the vicious beating of Frank Jude.  The lack of cooperation from the officers involved who were on the scene that night clearly affected the outcome of this case.  Frank Jude was beaten -- beaten badly -- and because of an unspoken code of silence, justice for him in this trial has been derailed.

Now we must come together.  The outpouring of support we've seen in the search for the missing boys -- neighbors working with neighbors, family members working with the police, the entire community praying for and supporting the families -- that is the strength as a city we must use now to heal and move forward. "
