Mayor Barrett Delivers 2007 State of the City Address
Mayor outlines plan to reduce crime, put more people back to work

Milwaukee – Mayor Tom Barrett delivered his third annual State of the City address to 500 members of the community this morning at Tramont Corporation in Riverwest. Barrett reiterated his number one priority to make Milwaukee safer and stronger by reducing crime and putting more people to work. .

Highlights of the Mayor's 2007 State of the City:

  • The creation of the Mayor's Office of Workforce Development and a commitment of$500,000 from theHelen Bader Foundation to fund it. Barrett also announced that he willseek designation by the State as the Chief Elected Official in charge of workforcedevelopment – a designation currently held by the County.
  • A commitment to seek funding for a minimum of 100 net new additional officers in theMilwaukee Police Department by 2008
  • A commitment not to raise property taxes to the proposed state levy of 4 percent
  • A goal of putting 1500 Milwaukee youth to work in the Mayor's Summer Jobs Program
  • The completion of the land sale of the Bacher Farm parcel at 60th and Green Tree to the U.S.Department of Labor for the Milwaukee Job Corps Center
  • $35,000 reduction in energy costs for the City's Municipal Complex and a commitment toreduce total energy usage by 15 percent in 2012
  • A commitment to expand the Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative to include job training,parenting skills, mediation and conflict management
